Decarbonisation Plan to 2050 – GESAP Falcone Borsellino Airport, Palermo

1. Introduction

GESAP, the company managing Palermo’s Falcone Borsellino Airport, works to ensure safe, efficient and high-quality services, in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and the fight against climate change.

This commitment translates into:

  • Environmental protection
  •  Improving energy efficiency
  •  Compliance with applicable environmental and energy legislation
  •  Continuous improvement of the integrated environmental and energy management system

 

2. Strategic commitments

GESAP has signed:

  • ACI Resolution – “Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050”
  • Toulouse Declaration – confirmation of the target of net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050

These commitments reaffirm the central role of sustainability in the company’s strategies.

 

3. Organisational structure and methodological approach

  • Responsibilities assigned to dedicated roles (e.g. Carbon Manager)
  • Approach based on

      • Emissions mapping
      • Definition of reduction trajectories
      • Implementation of technical and organisational measures
      • Offsetting of residual emissions

 

4. Carbon Footprint 2024

  • Calculation carried out in accordance with the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) manual
  • Indirect emissions (Scope 2) are calculated using a location-based approach

  • Reduction: -809.2 tCO₂ compared with 2018
  • Figure in line with the decarbonisation trajectory

 

5. Emissions trend

Emissions are showing a downward trend, thanks to the measures already adopted and those currently being implemented.

 

6. Reduction measures

Actions relating to:

  • Company fleet – replacement with low-impact vehicles
  • Fuel oil consumption – reduction and optimisation
  • Electricity consumption – efficiency improvements and renewable sources
  • Carbon removals – CO₂ absorption measures

 

7. Ultimate objective

By 2040, residual emissions (after all technical and organisational reductions) will be offset through carbon removal certificates.

 

8. Trajectories and targets – Scope 1 and 2

  • 2018 baseline: 4,714.4 tCO₂
  •  Reduction target: -75% compared with 2018
  •  The trajectories are currently being developed and updated periodically

 

9. Participation in ACA (Airport Carbon Accreditation)

  • From 2024 (based on 2023 data) – participation in the programme
  •  By 2030 – achievement of higher levels
  •  By 2050 – highest level of accreditation

  • ACA Level 4 achieved – active stakeholder engagement
  • Scope 3 emissions will be addressed through partnerships with:
        • Aircraft (full flight and LTO)
        • Ground access and staff travel
        • Ground handling activities

 

10. Training and communication

Training

  • 100 per cent of staff trained on environmental issues over the last three years
  • Extending the training programme to all stakeholders to raise awareness and encourage engagement

 

Communication

  • Participation in national and international events on sustainability
  • Taking a leading role in promoting sustainability within the local context
  • Drafting and publication of the Environmental Report
